From the driver’s seat of an old Renault Fluence with a Domino’s Pizza sign on top, Caleb aims her rifle at the last exposed camera surveilling the western parking lot. She fires once. The camera splinters, shards of glass and metal spraying the asphalt below. Caleb smiles with satisfaction.

Her brief foray into the enemy’s lobby had told her all she needed to know. The open design of the main floor revealed fifteen, maybe eighteen cubicles and meeting rooms. There are at least 50-60 cars in the parking lots that ring the building. Obviously, most of the employees work below-ground, as there is no second floor.

As in the Long Island facility, security here is robust. But the open nature of the main floor indicates that nothing of real value exists there. It’s probably more of a front for other more important assets. Caleb has no doubt that breaking into the main floor, even occupying it, would not be difficult. But she suspects the subterranean space is a bunker. This is not a job for an assassin.

Now that she’s done her job, she can relax—for a while—and see if Mason calls the local gendarmes. She doubts that he will. Her job for the time being is to make sure that none of her targets leave alive. Her most difficult challenge will be the expected mass exodus of employees at quitting time. Fortunately, there is one main door and around the corner an emergency exit. Caleb can observe both doors from one vantage point. She is convinced that this time no disguise will fool her if any of her targets attempts to leave.

Her cellphone vibrates. “Domino’s Pizza, may I help you?” she answers with smart-ass good cheer.

She expects the confused pause that follows. Finally a man’s voice politely says, “Miss Caleb, please.”

“Speaking.”

“How is the weather in Dublin?”

“Fiji could not be more beautiful,” Caleb says, repeating the coded response she was told to use with an unknown caller.

“Unfortunately, your friends will not be able to join you this evening as planned because of scheduling difficulties. They should all be arriving, however… what time is it there?”

“1:30 Friday afternoon.”

“…by Sunday morning then. Is everyone tucked in?”

“Nice and tight. Not to fret.”

“Good to hear. Have a slice of pizza for me. Sausage with green peppers,”

The exciting life of an assassin is often pure tedium, and this assignment has devolved into a one-woman siege. William Wyatt, the new head of Blackwatch, has arranged for a contingent of ten mercenaries to undertake the next phase of this operation. The mission has expanded, apparently, from neutralizing the targets to include recovering intelligence from the Allianz computer network. She had been told that a delay might occur to allow a technology expert to join the assault team, one capable of breaking into the company’s systems. A quiet week-end operation also eliminates the problem of having scores of employees around.

Caleb wishes she could end her career more spectacularly, but the world is changing. She will still go out with an unbroken string of wins.
